Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was shot on the High level bridge that crosses the River Tyne. I had traveled to Newcastle by train to visit my brother and I had a few hours to kill before he was able to collect me. I shot this photo and another I like of the smiling window cleaners that day.Time
It was about 10am, I guess this chap was late for work as he didn't hang around. I was also a little rushed for time and would of loved to explore a little longer. I must go back here, its a great location for a shoot of some kind.Lighting
The light was dull and dreary, it had been raining overnight and it was still spitting. This made for great even light, I would imagine on a bright day it could be very contrasting and difficult to expose. It was also quite windy which helped create these puddles on this side of the bridge as on the other there were none.Equipment
I used a Nikon D600 and a 50mm prime lensInspiration
I often look for reflections in puddles. I get some strange looks and very grubby knees.Editing
I removed a circular lamp that hung on one of the columns using the clone tool in photoshop. It was too close to the chaps head and was distracting. I also painted a curved handle on his folded umbrella to make it more obvious. I then of course changed it to B&W, however I happen to also like the colour version.In my camera bag
I mostly shoot on medium format film using a Hasselblad V series camera and one or two prime manual focus lenses. A few rolls of film and a tripod. I always use a tripod, they are awkward to carry but on the occasions I have decided to not carry one, I have usually regretted it. I also have my Nikon D600 with me as I might want to take a few snaps.Feedback
It's nice and cosy indoors, the fridge is stocked, you have chocolate and beer and Forrest Gump is on TV. You look outside, its raining, you look at your camera bag and you pick it up, say goodbye to your family and step outside. Going out to take photos in the rain can be a little uncomfortable and most cameras and lenses don't like getting wet but you go shooting in the rain because you love photography and you live in England so what you gonna do. I don't have any advise other than to keep looking and keep walking. I don't like to wait for a photo to happen, the right subject to walk into my frame. I go hunting for it and if its not here then it might be over there. Oh and one other thing, don't forget the chocolate!
