Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in Lawang Sewu, a historical landmark located in Semarang, Indonesia. The old connecting rooms are one of the main features of the building which could be found in almost every section of the building. These rooms strongly emphasize repetition when taken at a one perspective view.

Time

This photograph has always been my favorite from the moment I captured it. I remembered having a specific day just to shoot around Lawang Sewu and managed to get there pretty early in the morning when there aren't many visitors around. Thus, giving an enchanting and eerie atmosphere.

Lighting

When I went to photograph the Old Connecting Rooms, the sun was adjacent to the rooms giving an adequate amount of natural lighting to capture the details and signs of wear due to age.

Equipment

For this shot, I used the Canon 80d equipped with an 18-135mm Canon kit lens.

Inspiration

When I first came into one of the main sections of the building, the repetition, and endlessness of the eerie old connecting rooms really inspired me to photograph this unique feature of the building.

Editing

The photograph was taken in black and white, so I enhanced the details highlights, and shadow with Adobe Lightroom.

In my camera bag

The most important piece of equipment that I regularly brought along with me is the Canon 18-135mm kit lens, a very versatile lens used in many different types of photography. I then packed my very reliable Canon 80D with its Articulating touch screen I can shoot challenging angles with ease. In addition, I always bring along my 55-250mm Canon IS STM lens for its sharp image quality and telephoto capability. Lastly, I also wouldn't forget to bring my Canon 50mm F 1.8 STM lens to shoot subjects with a more shallow depth of field.

Feedback

The old connecting rooms of Lawang Sewu are aesthetically pleasing and unique. Ever since it became a tourist attraction and museum in 2013, it became a very popular photo spot for tourists and photographers alike making it pretty challenging to capture the mysterious essence of the connecting rooms. Furthermore, most of these rooms had space intervention installed to display for the museum. Fortunately, these connecting rooms are in almost every aspect of the building and the second story of the building tends to have fewer people in comparison to the first floor giving the opportunity to capture the unique essence of the connecting rooms. It is also recommended to shoot before midday to get the best lighting condition for the shot.
