Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Bonneville Salt Flats, east of Wendover, Utah.

Time

6:22 pm on September 19, 2020.

Lighting

The sun was setting, making for a nice back light. The Salt Flats provide a unique reflector.

Equipment

Nikon D850 Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 Di VC USD, at 70mm, f4.0 ISO 64 Exposure time 1/100s Hand held No flash

Inspiration

Brookelin Backus was one of several models brought in by the Wasatch Camera Club for the shoot. As the sun began to set, I posed Brookelin with the sun behind her and to my left. It was a beautiful setting. Brookelin brought good energy to her poses.

Editing

The RAW file was processed using DxO Photolab. I adjusted the horizon. I cropped the image to place her left hip near the center of the image. This created roughly equal space above her hand and below the hem of her dress.. I used a feature for local adjustments to lighten her face and hair, achieving a reflector like effect. I used Corel Paintshop Pro to edit out the eyelashes from her right eye that showed on the back side above the bridge of her nose.

In my camera bag

My camera bag typically contains my D850, the Tamron 24-70 mm used for this image, a Nikon 85mm f1.4, a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, a Swiss Army lens, aka a Nikon 28-300 zoom, a TTL flash, batteries, memory cards, a lens cloth, and a remote shutter release. Depending on the shoot I will bring a tripod.

Feedback

Look for good scenery. Work with experienced models who don't need a lot of direction. Exercise patience with yourself and the models. Be nice, compliment the models, and keep them happy. Connect with their energy. Use the screen on the back of your camera. Not only does it give you useful feedback, but models often like to catch a glimpse of what the two of you have just created. Be careful not to interrupt the flow of the energy you're sharing. Take lots of shots and be prepared to spend time editing. Try different things post processing. Don't be afraid to ask for feedback from people you trust before you finish your work and produce the final image. Find joy in what you do. Express gratitude that you are able to do it.
