Location
This photo was taken on the back country roads near Auckland, New Zealand on a stage of a local historic car rally.Time
The shot was captured mid morning on an overcast but still day. So still that the dust hung in the air for several minutes after each car passed until there was a permanent dust haze.Lighting
There is nothing special about the lighting for this - the key challenge was waiting for the dust to settle enough to enable a clear shot.Equipment
Shot was taken with a Nikon D700 @200mm using a Nikon 70-200VR F2.8 lens, Settings were ISO 200, Aperture Priority, F3.2, Shutter speed 1/500sec. White Balance: Cloudy and centre weighted metering.Inspiration
I have been following motorsport for many years. I like photographing rally events because there is often more spectacular action and much more flexibility to move around and get good action shots from many angles. Often the colours available in a back country setting offer more variety than a track based shot will. Its also an opportunity to grab some interesting landscape shots if the weather is changeable and there is time between the rally stages. This particular Rally - The Silver Fern Rally has a long history, features historic rally cars and top drivers from around the world.Editing
A small amount of sharpening was added. In my camera bag
I use a Nikon D850 today. I vary my choice of lens to carry depending on the event, what scenes I know are likely to be available and how much walking I have to do. I choose from a Nikon 70-200 VR F2.8E plus 1.4 Adapter, Nikon 24-70 F2.8, Nikon 200-500 F5.6E, and a Sigma 14-24 F2.8 Art. Take along the usual CPLs, spare batteries, cards, rain covers, chamois for wet days, and an Induro Carbon monopod. If I expect there to be some good landscape opportunities I will also take a 100mm filter set and adapter as well.Feedback
When shooting on car rallies choose your location wisely to ensure you do not pose a danger to yourself or the competitors. Dust, flying stones and errant rally cars can ruin your day very quickly.
