Location
I took this photo at a motorsport event for Super V8 saloons at Hampton Downs International Racing Circuit, south of Auckland New Zealand.Time
I took this picture mid afternoon on a hot summer day under a bright harsh sun.Lighting
With sports one does not get to choose the best opportunity and lighting very often so I was happy that this shot really worked for me when other angles just did not convey the same combination of themes.Equipment
Nikon D700 and Nikon VR 70-200 f2.8G lens with CPL filter.Inspiration
John McIntyre was a champion having another great run in a national touring car series. The juxstaposition of his helmet, name, race number and the Clan McIntyre tartan on his helmet really appealed to me as telling a story about pride and success.Editing

I split my time between motorsport and landscape photography. I now use a Nikon D850 and battery grip fitted with a RRS L plate for tripod use. Lenses I use for motorsport are typically a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8E and Nikon 200-500mm f5.6E. I will use a Nikon 24-70 f2.8 for static shots as well. For landscape I take a Sigma 14-24 f2.8 Art lens (I much prefer this to the Nikon equivalent), Nikon 24-70 f2.8 and Nikon 70-200 f2.8E. For primes, I will take my 50mm f1.4 and Sigma 105mm f2.8. I also carry a 100mm Benro filter selection and lens adapters, a Hoodman outdoor loupe, spare batteries, cards, and a remote. I use a Gitzo tripod with ARCA Swiss P0 head.Feedback
For motorsports I always fit a polariser to each lens to reduce vizor or windscreen glare as I want to see the drivers eyes if at all possible when they are in the car. I will use a flash when photographing rally cars in forests. With the D850 the 9 FPS frame rate is generally workable for action shots but acknowledge that in some circumstances the faster professional frame rates are desirable. I do like the versatility that the D850 offers for sports action and landscapes. The large file sizes available enable quality enlargements when printing.
