This photo was taken right on campus at my school, so I didn't have to travel far from home to get it! My friend and I had been wanting to do a dance shoot for a while and finally got together one evening to do it. This particular shot came into my mind's eye when I saw my school's seal on the ground and thought it would be a perfect spot for a shot like this.Time
We knew we wanted to do the shoot in the late afternoon / early evening, so the light would be a little more gentle than in the middle of the day. We also wanted to catch golden hour, because who doesn't love to shoot at golden hour? As the sun began to set and everything around us got that particular little hint of yellow (you know the one), I knew I had the perfect opportunity for a standout shot.Lighting
I've always loved shooting at golden hour, because it gives my surroundings a fantasy-like quality that I can never reproduce anywhere else. When it came to this particular shot, I felt that the harsh shadows created by the natural light would make for a more dynamic shot, bringing out the wide variety of textures that contribute to the visual interest of the overall composition.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon Rebel T6i, with an EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, and no other equipment.Inspiration
In the middle of our shoot, I had suddenly remembered a similar shot from another photographer that I had seen recently that featured a dancer en pointe in the middle of a rainy city street. I remember loving the shot, and decided to try to create a similar shot of my own. I had the perfect opportunity to try it out: a dancer friend wearing pointe shoes and some beautiful natural light.Editing
I tend to do minimal post processing on my photos unless they really need some work or I have a particular vision in mind that required post-processing. For this image, the only post-processing I did was minimal edits such as adjusting the white balance, as well as highlights / shadows. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon Rebel T6i, and I typically carry all three of my lenses for it: the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, and my trusty EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (a.k.a. the Nifty Fifty). Also, I always make sure I have my extra battery as well as some extra memory cards, because you can never be too prepared. Finally, I keep my Olympus OMPC 35mm handy in case of that special occasion where I may decide a certain shot would be better immortalized on a roll of film.Feedback
Timing is always key, especially when it comes to natural light. In the later hours of the day, a time frame of a couple minutes could be all it takes for the lighting to completely change around you. I would advise others to go into the shoot with a general idea of what kinds of shots they may like to take, so as not to miss that perfect opportunity for the shot you want, although improvising on the scene is always fun to do too! Also, it's important to remember that getting that ONE good shot isn't always the best case scenario. Maybe you miss that key moment during golden hour, but you can always take some killer twilight shots instead. Whatever you do, have fun with it!
