Location
Made this photo on Maiga Island, Semporna, North Borneo (Sabah). This was a small hand carved wooden boat called Lepa or Lipa. Belonging to a group of stateless seaborne lifestyle people of Bajau Laut (otherwise known as Sea Gypsies or Sea Nomads). Bajau Laut people and their boats are found living in the seas of the Philippines, North Borneo, and Indonesia.Time
There was heavy rain in the early morning before heading towards Maiga Island. Luckily, the rain clouds cleared out and spotted a Lepa boat left unattended and beached. Decided to make this photography with a Lepa boat against the streaking sun hidden behind the clouds and horizon. The sun rose early in North Borneo. Set up the camera on a tripod for long exposure to smooth out the low tide water.Lighting
Because the sun rose early and fast (in Noth Borneo), setting up the camera needed to be quick and precise. As you can see from the photograph, the sun rays were streaking and making lines from the heavy morning rain clouds.Equipment
Made the photograph with Sony A7M3 with Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 on ISO 100, f/16, 25 sec. with ND filter on a tripod. No other camera accessories were utilized.Inspiration
Got rained out on the day before this shot taken. Upon arrival at the island, needed to make mutiple shots because of the quick rising sun against the morning rain clouds as a backdrop, as well as those houses on stilts.Editing
Adjust luminosity and contrast against the foreground (i.e. Lepa boat) and raised the saturation on the streaking sun light. Lower the exposure (using linear gradient mask) at the horizon and above and increase exposure on the boat and beach (using linear gradient mask). In my camera bag
For travel photography, carried 2 X Sony A7M3 with Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Sony 70-200mm f/4, and Sony-Zeiss 55mm f/1.8. Decided to carry Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 because of landscape photography.Feedback
Knowing your camera well is very useful especially in travel/street photography, as well as landscpe photography. The decisive moment happens quickly especially in travel/street photography. As for landscape photography, setting up the camera quickly (i.e. settings, exposure, etc.) is equally important because the sun rise quickly in this part of the world.
