Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a small dry lake bed north of Las Vegas, Nevada. You can usually find some undisturbed spots on the north end of the lake bed which is what Eclipse and I were searching for.

Time

This photo was taken late in the afternoon. Eclipse and I had already visited several locations and were on our way back to Las Vegas when we decided to shoot one last set at the lake bed.

Lighting

I didn't use any artificial lighting. At this time of day the sun provides some nice long shadows.

Equipment

This was shot with a hand held Canon 5D, Mk 3 and a Sigma 50mm, f1.4 lens from the bed of my pickup truck looking down on Eclipse.

Inspiration

I liked the way the cracks in the dry lake bed were offset by the smoothness of Eclipse's skin. Her pose reminded me of something out of a religious text.

Editing

This photo was processed in Lightroom. I have several presets that I've developed for model photography, and then I converted it to black and white.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a 28-135 Canon lens and the Sigma 50 mm along with a couple of spare batteries, some cloth, and a reflector.

Feedback

Dry lake beds act as a giant reflector so the lighting can be tricky and hard on the model. The earlier or later in the day you can shoot there is easier on the model and the photographer. The higher and straighter you can get above the model makes the photo better, especially the shadows. In this photo, the model was laying on the lake bed, and I was standing on a toolbox in the back of my truck bed almost directly above the model. Eclipse was laying very close to the truck, and you can see that even this late in the day she had to turn her head away from the sun.
