Location
This image was captured near “Steamer Lane” in Santa Cruz California. Taken from Lighthouse Point.Time
Taken around 3:00 pm as you can see the light through the top of the wave, the sun was at a low angle when taken.Lighting
It’s all about light. Lighting changes the perspective and outcome of any image taken. Time of day and Season of the year contribute to how the image will be viewed after capture. Be patient, continue to shoot until your lighting is just right. Many great images are missed because of impatience.Equipment
Used a Nikon D610 with Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 VRll lenses hand held.Inspiration
That was week of the “Mavericks” and waves were larger all up and down the coast. I was looking for large waves and surfers riding them on the Steamers side of the point.Editing
This image was greatly cropped in Photoshop and a little tweaking in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I have several lenses that I carry with me, but use the Nikon 24-70, and 70-200 the most, both are 2.8 fast lenses. I have two Nikon bodies, a D610 and a D850. The image was taken with the D610. I also carry a RRS tripod with 55mm ball.Feedback
Watch the weather and tide reports, research the area you want to shoot. Get there early and walk the area to find your best angles. Waves come in sets, but be ready for any rouge waves that may be larger than normal ones.
