Location
A large stream running along Upper Tremont Road near the Smoky Mountain National Park. The stream becomes quite engorged during heavy rains.Time
This Particular day we had been shooting the area around the stream looking for scenic possibilities among the small falls and ripples. During the late afternoon we were joined by several car loads of thrill seekers taking advantage of what is usually a tranquil stream.Lighting
The weather had been rainy for several days and heavy overcast and occasional downpours still persisted. Actually perfect lighting for water sport shooting. Shot during a sunny afternoon the contrast would have made this a difficult capture. White water has a tendency to blowout.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D850 and the Nikkor70_200mm f2.8 lens. ISO was 400 and shutter speed 1/400 sec. at f8. Camera hand held for the action shots.Inspiration
The white water was impressive and the Kayakers were having a blast. The sound added an extra dimension. More fun than shooting waterfalls! The water was muddy which also made the waterfall shots less appealing and lastly this was the first time I had seen kayakers on this stretch of water.Editing
Simple crop to remove an out of focus branch in a corner and a curves adjustment. In my camera bag
Nikon D850, D5 and the holy trinity of lenses; Nikkor 17-35 F2.8, Nikkor 24 -70 f2.8 and Nikkor 70-200 f2.8.Feedback
Keep an open eye and look for opportunities. None of us had seen kayakers on this stretch before and it certainly was not on our agenda. This trip was a week long photo adventure sponsored by The Nikonians with the intent of shooting spring wild flowers, mountain scenic and pastoral landscapes in the National Park and a few days in Cades Cove Tn. shooting the historic buildings and animals of the Cove. This was just a serendipitous opportunity.
