I wanted to combine the milky way and make it look like camping under the stars. I had 1 speed light set up inside the tent, and another one outside the tent. The trees were lit by the camp fire we had going.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D mkiii, a tamron 15-30mm F2.8 lens, promaster CF tripod, and 2 Canon speed lights.Inspiration
I was just wandering around looking at the stars and trying to come up with an idea. My friend went inside the tent with his headlamp on as I was trying to set up for the milky way. The light in the tent added the missing element I was looking for.Editing
Yup, photo shop. Honestly don't remember the details. A lot of experimentation. Mostly just curves and contrast. In my camera bag
Canon 5d, Canon 24-70 F2.8, 70-200 F2.8, Tamron 15-30 F2.8, couple batteries, couple memory cards, usually some snacks, and a can of bear spray (Nothing scarier than branches snapping in the woods late at night!)Feedback
Night photos can be very tricky depending on weather, light pollution, the moon and a bunch of other factors. I have given up on ever really having a plan, or a set image in my mind. The best photos come from just setting up, experimenting, and then adjusting based on the image you get on the camera. Sometimes clouds at night could be more stunning than the stars. It's almost impossible to recreate someone else's image, so try something new.
