Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the peak "Rote Flüh" in Tirol, Austria.

Time

I spent the night at the peak with my father-in-law and a friend after we climbed up the day before for the sunset. We shot some photos of the stars during the night. After just four hours of sleep we woke up for the sunrise. It was cold but one of the best sunrises I´ve ever experienced.

Lighting

The sun rose right behind the mountain. We enjoyed the colorfull sky and waited until the sun passed the mountain. I love the combination of light and shadow and the colorful sky. The red light reflecting from the snow in the foreground gives the picture something special.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with the Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L on a 'Cullmann'-Tripod.

Inspiration

I was at the peak one year before. We thought about the circumstances during a sunrise. Nearly a whole year we thought about how beautiful a sunrise at the peak would be. So we planned a new trip and a stay at the mountain peak. It was quite cold and exhausting but the pictures are worth all of it.

Editing

I didn't have to do that much in the post to get this picture. I developed the RAW by slightly adjusting the exposure and the color intensity.

In my camera bag

My bag was filled with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L, Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L, Canon EF 28-138mm f3.5-5.6 IS, Canon EOS 100D with the kit-lens EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6, some batteries, a flashlight, garbage bags (always leave the nature like you want to find it) and different filters. Since this shoot I added to my equipment the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the Sigma 24-105mm f4 ART

Feedback

You have to be prepared for everything. In a situation like this you have to wear the right clothes. Plan ahead. The weather is quite changeable in the mountains so always kepp an eye on it. Never do such a trip alone. Maybe there is an emergency and you need some help. If you want to take some pictures of the nature an you love it always think about what you are doing with it. You don't want someone to destroy everything for you. So do not destroy it for the others.
