Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo as I walked through the Pencil Pine rainforest walk in Cradle Mountain National Park, Tasmania. I have visited there a few times, and it is always so beautiful with the green mossy landscape and stillness of nature. The misty rain had cleared just long enough for me to capture a photo as the sun burst through the trees, adding to the mystical ambience of the forest.

Time

It was in the later part of the afternoon.

Lighting

This was taken in natural light.

Equipment

I used my Canon 700D, I took the photo with the camera hand held. No flash was used and the settings were f/3.5 and ISO 400. My lens was the EF-S 18-135mm, for this photograph the focal length was 18/1 at 1/40 shutter speed.

Inspiration

I love the beauty of rainforests and particularly in the later part of the day. After rain it has a freshness that ignites the senses, the smell of the vegetation, the sound of the raindrops falling from the trees, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves, and the colour of the freshly moistened plantlife. As the sun burst through the treetops it illuminated the setting.

Editing

I didn't have to do much post-processing. I brought out some of the shadows in the denser treed areas in the right of the photo and a little clarification.

In my camera bag

I usually take with me on my walk my Canon 700D or Canon 5D Mark ll with the Canon EF-S 18-135mm lens. I have found it a good all round lens. I don't always take the tripod, I prefer to travel light when walking. I have other lenses such as the Canon 24-70mm and Canon 70-200mm. Depending on the landscape I choose the lens before setting out.

Feedback

Time of day is really important to getting the right light for a rainforest photograph. Too dark and the camera struggles to get clarity and colour, also the photo will not be able to focus or if it does the photo can be very noisy. I don't use flash for rainforest photos as it gives an unnatural look to the photo. If you can walk soon after fresh rain it brings out the greens and other colours.
