I was up very early and saw this amazing sunrise.

This was in a 5,000-acre private nature preserve, taken from an open safari vehicle from probably 100 meters away.

Got this shot in Kruger National Park, South Africa, from about 100 meters away.

The sun was setting and some thunderstorms were forming, and there was a full moon. I managed to get a few shots without a tripod.

Not such an amazing shot until you consider I snapped this with a little Canon from my motorcycle at 60mph. Every now and then I get lucky!

I was hiking in Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA when I looked out across the lake and spotted this eagle standing on a sand bar.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in the back yard at my home on Lake Norman, in North Carolina. I just happened to see the butterfly on the azalea and ran and grabbed my camera, and luckily it had not flown away when I returned.

Time

This was at 1:19 PM so the sun was pretty high in the sky.

Lighting

Because of the position of the sun I was able to get pretty good lighting without any issue. I simply moved to a point where the butterfly and the flowers in the foreground could be in perfect focus.

Equipment

I used a Canon PowerShot SX610 HS in macro mode, fully automatic. I zoomed in so that I wouldn't scare the butterfly away but not so much that I couldn't hold the camera steady enough for a clear shot. I didn't even use a tripod, just hand held the camera. The settings the camera chose were F-stop f/6.9, exposure 1/400 sec, and a focal length of 81mm.

Inspiration

The contrast in colors caught my eye and I thought it would make an interesting photograph.

Editing

None at all.

In my camera bag

If I'm on a trip I carry the PowerShot for quick photos, plus my Nikon P600 for the more scenic shots. I'm a total amateur so I don't have extra lenses. Most of my trips are on a motorcycle so space is limited.

Keep a camera handy even when you're just out in the yard in case something interesting comes along!
