Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the Quando river in Namibia.

Time

We were on a boat trip in the late afternoon. We entered a side stream and a group of Hippos came up from the water. The backlight created a special effect on the hair around the hippo’s mouth. When he opened his mouth to show his strength it created this special picture.

Lighting

This images was taken in natural light. The light came from the back and created a special effect on the hair of the Hippo.

Equipment

The images was taken with a Canon EOS 6D with a Tamron 150-600 telephoto lens. We were on aboat, so no tripods or special equipment could be used.

Inspiration

We were on a boat safari and I was out to find interesting wild life images. When we entered the side stream and saw the Hippos rising from the water, the light was just perfect and everything seems to fall in place for this iconic image.

Editing

The postprocessing was very limeted. Some minor cropping and adjustments in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon EOS 6D with a 24-70 F/2.8 Canon Lens. For Wildlife I use a Tamron 150-600 Telephoto lens. I also normally carry a 15-30 F/2.8 Tamron wide angle lens for Landscapes. In the bag is a bit of a difficult problem and is often dependant on the environment I work in. For Portrait work I use a Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8 II USM and I almost always have a Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 in the bag. I sometimes carry 1.4x and 2x tele converters from Canon but only use them when really needed. I Always carry a tripod and when I'm doing architectural or landscape work I also carry different filters.

Feedback

The best advice I can give anybody that are interested in taking good wildlife images is two-fold. Firstly you need to know your equipment very well. That way you can react quickly when the perfect moment presents itself. The second piece of advice would be to spend as much time as possible in the wild. That way more opportunities will arise and you will know and understand their behavior better.
