Location
This photo was taken at an isolated series of lakes near Canmore, Alberta. This shot was at the southern edge of the upper Grassi Lake.Time
Thankfully, cloud cover permitted this shot around 3:00 in the afternoon. The water was amazingly cold, and almost instantaneously numbing, but the heat of the july sun made it just bearable enough for a few choice shots.Lighting
I wanted to capture the sheen of the suit as it dripped water, a challenge as wool suits only stay truly wet for about 30 seconds. So the somewhat harsh lighting of the mid-day sun was actually quite ideal for the circumstances.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 6D with a 24-120 F4 L lens. I has a small speedlight on the camera itself, and a canon 530 EX with a soft box approx five feet to the left to balance the sunlight.Inspiration
I climbed up to this mountain lake to shoot some fashion photography with a few female models, but none of them would ge into the ice cold glacier lake. (I don't really blame them) My brother was along as my lighting/posing assistant, and happened to have an old black suit with him that he didn't mind destroying. I left three gorgeous models for about an hour while forcing my brother to dunk himself again and again to get this shot.Editing
I felt that this shot needed a bit of extra drama, so I boosted the clarity and detail, and decreased the saturation and vibrance to achieve a cold, serious feel to the image. In my camera bag
I normally take my lowepro backpack style pack filled with my Canon 60D, two speedlights, a 14mm F2.8 prime, 50mm 1.2 prime, 24-120mm F4, 70-200mm F4, and my tripod. All in all it weighs about 15 lbs.Feedback
Always be prepared to switch gears and try something you weren't planning on shooting. Having the equipment necessary to adapt the each situation is rewarding and although not strictly essencial, the results are usually worth it.
