Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while travelling on a road trip through Tasmania, Australia. I love all things yesteryear and vintage so this display really appealed to me.

Time

As this is an indoor photo the time of day did not affect the image. Of course, I sought permission from the staff at the store before taking the photo.

Lighting

I wanted to highlight the lollies in the jars, which was quite difficult as the only lighting available to me was under the florescent lights in the store. I moved around a bit to seek the best angle that produced the least amount of glare off the jars, whilst still having enough light to adequately see the candy.

Equipment

This image was taken using a Canon Digital Ixus 750 with an aperture f/2.8, ISO 200, shutter 1/25 and with a focal length of 7700/1000. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I love all things yesteryear and vintage so as soon as I saw this old lolly shop I was drawn in. I knew I had to photograph it. Of course, I sought permission before taking the photo and minimised any disruption to the trading of the store and to other customers.

Editing

I try to do as little post processing with my images as possible. I like my images to be natural and pretty much "as shot". This image required minimal tweaking of contrast, brightness and vibrance only.

In my camera bag

My go to equipment is my Canon 6D with 24-105 lens. I usually always have this with me, but if not I am a great promoter of just taking the photo with whatever you have to hand (in this case my point and shoot Canon Ixus). For me its about capturing the moment.

Feedback

When shooting indoors, especially at a shop or similar, always seek permission and take the image quickly and without disrupting business or other customers. Remember, these people are still trying to trade and are doing you a favour by allowing you to photograph their store. Also, don't get too wrapped up in having to have the perfect camera equipment all the time. Just take the photo!
