Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Letchworth State Park during a visit with my son, who was attending Geneseo College, April 2017.

Time

My son was taking me on a tour of the park, which is known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," and it certainly lives up to that title. It was near 3:30 when we stopped downstream from this magnificent sight, so the light was just right.

Lighting

The natural light of the afternoon sun was sufficiently cooperative.

Equipment

Although I had my Samsung phone with me, and took several shots with it, this image was captured with my Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ18. No additional lens or lightning was used as the afternoon sun was sufficiently cooperative.

Inspiration

Nature has always been a primary interest for me in my photography, so I would have to say that the landscape, the action and drama of the Gorge itself, was inspiration enough to take the time to compose this image.

Editing

This shot needed very little post-processing, aside from minor tweaks to contrast and highlights.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I travel with a Canon Powershot G12, an Olympus C-5000, the LUMIX, and my Google Pixel 4. In addition, there are a variety of filters, Opteka 0.43X super wide-angle/macro and 2.2X telephoto lenses (compatible with my Powershot). I also have a Bluetooth selfie stick which comes in handy for tricky angles with my Pixel 4. Being limited by finances, my gear is modest, but I feel that for a photographer it is your vision and creativity that makes the photo in spite of, or maybe because of, the limitations of the equipment one has.

Feedback

My only advice is to be open and intuitive.
