Behind The Lens

Location

I tried something different with this photo, and so this recognition is gratifying. It was shot outdoors in the plaza of the Louvre in Paris and is the pyramid designed by I.M. Pei. The challenge, in my mind, was to shoot something famous and make it look like something else ("...from a different perspective").

Time

Time of day was an afternoon of shooting in this part of Paris.

Lighting

It was a grey day, so that I was not competing with the light.

Equipment

The camera was a Nikon D7100 set for RAW and jpeg shots, with a Nikkor 300 mm lens. That afternoon I was using a tripod to steady the camera for multiple shots.

Inspiration

The Louvre is one of the most photographed sites in Paris, if not the world. There are so many takes on Pei's pyramid. I wanted to do something unique. Looking through the lens and eliminating people, I saw a geometric abstract.

Editing

I smoothed shots with Photoshop Elements and then combined two of the photos with Photomatix (HDR).

In my camera bag

I have a new bag. In Paris last year, I carried the Nikon DSLR and the 300 mm lens. The light tripod was in a separate small shoulder bag. I used a Nikon P600 point-and-shoot when I wanted to be nimble but still have a zoom and quality shots. Now, I have a Sony RX10 III which combines features of the DSLR and the P600. It should be the only camera I need for our next trip to Paris this December, 2017.

Feedback

My credo is that I see something that can become something. First, choose a subject with potential, like a part of something familiar. Second, aim and shoot considering the composition in the camera and striving for the best focus. Third, process the photo(s) to turn it/them into an artistic picture (such as a little snipping for symmetry). Finally, show only the best one to the world.
