We were on holiday in America from South Africa, the previous day I scouted for a good location to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge at night before we depart for Yosemite Park, I woke up at 03h00 with rain pouring down - I decided to drive to the bridge regardless of the weather as I won't have this opportunity again. Driving at my selected spot it was pouring with rain, I had a raincoat on but no umbrella to cover my equipment - out of the window goes my long exposure shot. Taking a photo from inside the car was not an option - to many obstacles blocking the bridge, I decided to jump out of the car, jump over the chain to get as clear a shot as possible, first attempt did not work, water on the lens, off go the raincoat and cover the camera, over the chain take a couple of quick shots and back in the car, now it was pouring down harder and I decided to return to the hotel

Lighting

I wanted to make the photo look dramatic with the low clouds and rain pouring down

Equipment

Nikon D800, 24 - 70MM F2.8 lens set at 32mm, hand held, was raining to hard for a tripod

Inspiration

Capture memories and inspire me to improve my photography every day

Editing

Yes I use Lightroom to create the HDR feel

In my camera bag

D800, D700, 14 - 24mm, 24 - 70mm, 70 - 200mm, 105mm all F2.8 lenses - sold all my Nikon kit - switched to Sony recently

Planning and preparation is important - I did not look at the weather forecast the day before
