Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Louvre as we were walking in. It was magical walking up to it. There were so many good pictures from this trip, while taking this one it really struck me that I was taking some quality pictures. Pictures that other people would like to see and not just me or my family. This picture made me think that I could actually take some great looking timeless shots.

Time

It was around eight or so in the morning and a couple of days into our trip to France. The crowds just started to file in so there wasn't much to avoid having people in the shot. As a note, little did we know that the whole day that we had planned for exploring the Louvre would sadly be insufficient, two or three days is more suitable, but that sums it up for Paris, the week and a half that we took could have easily filled up a month; there is so much to see and do there. We can't wait to go back.

Lighting

All natural lighting coming out of the archway. Time of day didn't really have an effect on the final shot, I think you could capture this shot at anytime really.

Equipment

I had my trusty Nikon D7100 and kit lens, a 18-300 f3.5. No tripod, no flash for the shot, it was a quick frame up and shoot. I think that I actually was still walking when I shot it.

Inspiration

During the whole trip to Paris, we were so in awe of everything. Taking pictures while you are in some place that is new is such a boon for creativity. I think that you end up looking at things a bit differently. I wasn't really thinking of any specific rules of photography or anything, just an open mind and I knew it was something that would turn out good.

Editing

I did end up altering the curve for the photo to squash the blacks a bit and I added a slight vignette, That really was it.

In my camera bag

I try not to go overboard with my bag. I did carry a flash and a tripod and I usually do. I rarely get them out though. At the time of this picture, I was using the Nikon D7100 with a battery grip and a decent lens (18-300). I figured that I would be ready for any situation. The reality of it was that at the end of the trip my wrist hurt for a couple of weeks due to the weight of it all. I have now switched over to a mirror less camera, an extra battery and a couple of prime lenses. I don't find that the large span of the zoom lens really gave me anything that I couldn't live with and the weight is much less. An extra battery in the pocket weighs a lot less than the battery grip :).

Feedback

As we take pictures, I think the end result is to evoke feelings in the viewer bar none. Any subject can evoke feelings, so I try to put my subjects into a light (excuse the pun) that will hopefully do that. Looking a things (ie - your surroundings, etc.) differently helps with creativity. It's hard but well worth the effort. I think that even the most mundane subjects can take on a 'new life' if you look at them differently. always remember: Art is everything and everything is art! Exercise your creativity.
