Lighting

Sun light AND shadows

Equipment

Canon T3i with EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM @ 46 mm, f5.2 No flash, camera was hand held.

Inspiration

I did a photo shoot with Amelia Simone at the Guy Chick House, designed by Bernard Maybeck, in Berkeley. We shot at various locations in the garden before going inside. When I saw the effect of the shadows I knew I was onto something. I did 85 images beneath this tree fern, some were full figure images, many were just her upper torso and face, and three, including this one, were just her body. I edited seven images from this group in Photoshop.

Editing

I did no cropping on this image. Using some personal preset curves, I increased the contrast and darkened the image. I believe that I also darkened the lower right corner so it would not call attention to itself.

In my camera bag

At the time I took this, I had my Canon T3i and the 15-85 mm lens. This is a great lens and was a big step up from the kit lens that came with the camera. Since then I added a Canon 10-18 for shooting architectural subjects and their 55-250. Next came a Canon T6s with the 18-135 mm lens. Although I already had these focal lengths covered, the 18-135 gives more flexibility when shooting trains as I don't have to change lenses as often, and that is not always possible when a train is approaching. Now I also have a Sigma 100-400, a great lens, very sharp with great image stabilization. Works very well hand held at 400 mm.

Feedback

Well, first you need a great model like Amelia, look her up on Model Mayhem if you are interested. Next you need to find a tree fern and have your model pose under it. Of course, you also need a sunny day. Going a little deeper, to do this kind of photograph you need to understand the graphic quality shadows have in photographs. As this image shows, they are much more prominent in photographs than in real life.
