Mt Evans is one of my favorite places! Awesome shot! I give you credit for taking the road up in the dark.

I really like this picture - it is beautifully composed. It also shows the smallness of us compared to the rest of the world.

:) Thanks. Being up there makes you feel both small and large at the same time

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken atop of Mount Evans in Colorado. At over 14,000 feet, this is the tallest peak in the front range. It is also home to the tallest paved road in North America. Altitude aside, this place is breathtaking :-P

Time

My friends and I woke before 3 AM in order to make it to the top of the peak for the sunrise. We drove two hours to the mountain and watched the Perseid Meteor Showers unfold above us as we drove through the mountains. This was a truly magical day.

Lighting

The light unfolded so quickly, I still had my camera on the settings from trying to capture the meteor shower from the night before. My hands were also so cold! I nearly dropped my camera trying to get into position for this shot.

Equipment

Taken with a Nikon D3100, no tripod, 18-200mm lens at 18mm.

Inspiration

Honestly, I just wanted to watch the sunrise with my love. It was very organic. We knew it would be beautiful and Amy has a natural instinct for putting herself in photogenic places. Credit to her for looking so at peace with this magical moment :)

Editing

The light was dimmed a bit in Photoshop, and the foreground exposure was brightened. I also removed a very small bit of lens flare.

In my camera bag

I only have one camera, a Nikon D3100, and I'm just getting to understand it fully. I strive for composure and light, and I'm working on improving the clarity in my shots. I always pack 2 or more batteries, a tripod, and a remote shutter. As most of my shots are taken in mountain environments, I also generally carry water, warm clothes, and bear spray!

Feedback

Plan very little about your shot, just focus on getting out of the house and into the wild. I never knew this rock existed, never knew Amy would sit the way she is sitting, and didn't know if the clouds would be gone or in surplus. Just plan to get out of your bed and into the world with fully charged batteries and the rest will take care of itself :)
