Location
I sometimes give photography workshops to other professional photographers. This workshop was about location, light and storytelling. I don't plan most of my workshops to show photographers to make the best out of any light, weather and location to be able to take great images during any time of the day and to not depend on external factors. I asked Julia, the 8 year old model, to dress up like a ballerina. I planned on shooting outside but it was a very rainy day. Next to the field where I wanted to shoot was this horse riding school. I met the owner a while ago and she told me I was always welcome to shoot around the horses. So I decided to go over there. Then I just started shooting and let the story evolve without excactly knowing what I was going to shoot.Time
I shot this image in the middle of the day.Lighting
The light settings where great to show the photographers how positioning the model under the windows in the roof changed the complete look and feel of the photograph. During this session we also shot a lot of portraits in which this became even clearer. No additional lighting was used.Equipment
I always use my Nikon D750. I shot this image with the Sigma 70-200 f2,8. I always use this lens when I am trying to create an image that tells a story because of my long distance to the subject a model feels less observed, especially kids. I zoomed in to 200mm to create the strong Depth of Field.Inspiration
I love combining unusual combinations like in this image: ballerina - horse riding school. It gives great opportunities to let a story evolve and create images that are interesting and surprising. I love stories and I love images. Perfect combination.Editing
I did, I changed the contrast, removed a lot of yellow and added some blue and magenta to create a slight vintage feeling which I thought combined great with the ballerina theme. In my camera bag

Combine two surprising elements that have nothing to do with eachother like in this image ballerina and horse riding school. Just start shooting and be open for what happens: let the story unroll. Use a long lens to give your model some freedom. Observe the light very well and use it.
