Location
I captured the landing of this Northern Shoveler at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, in Irvine, California, USA.Time
This image was captured at 8:00am on December 8, 2014.Lighting
This was taken early morning about an hour and 15 minutes after sunrise. The sunlight was coming from behind me over my right shoulder. I have to capture these Ducks with their white chests early so I can achieve a good exposure of the dark and white feathers.Equipment
I was using a Canon 7D mark II with a EF 500mm f/4L + 1.4extender. On a tripod with gimbal head.Inspiration
I enjoy capturing birds in flight and find capturing a sharp image of a bird coming straight at you the most challenging.Editing
I processed this RAW image through Lightroom and Photoshop; In my camera bag
When I pack to capture bird images, I carry, Canon 7D M II; Canon 5D M III; 500mm; 70/200 zoom; 1.4 extender; tripod with gimbal head; extra batteries; lens cloth; sun block; insect repellant.Feedback
Have lots of patience, study the birds activity so you can pick out the best location to set up. Get to know your shooting location and th birds seasonal behavior so you can anticipate your shot. It took many trips and attempts to capture this image.
