Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in East Timor just before walking up Mt Ramelau - a sacred mountain for the Timorese

Time

About midnight, in an area with no electricity - one of the darkest places I have ever been!

Lighting

For Milky Way photography as far away from any artificial light as possible - there are fewer and fewer areas like this every year which is sad for those that love to stare into the heavens

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon d7000 and Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens. A sturdy tripod was essential for this long exposure - not too long though or there would be star trails.

Inspiration

The lack of artificial light and the dry season combined to give spectacular Milky Way photos - I wasn't expecting to get such great photos at all but the conditions were perfect.

Editing

I tried to bring out the colours in the Milky Way a little more - not too much to make it look too artificial though.

In my camera bag

Not too much - a tripod, wide angle lens, remote release, a telephoto and that's about it.

Feedback

Get your focus right before it gets dark - the d7000 is great as well because you have the custom U1 and U2 settings so you can get everything ready for the photo earlier and it will save every setting. A sturdy tripod is essential as well.
