Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

Time

I went on the Eiffel Tower sunset tour while I was in Paris, France. As I was on the tour it became nightfall and I was waiting for the Eiffel Tower to start it's sparkle effect with the strobe lights. I took this photo around 7:30pm on November 11th, 2015.

Lighting

The Eiffel Tower is so beautifully lit that I did not use any additional lighting for this photo instead I used the lighting from the Eiffel Tower to help obtain this shot.

Equipment

This was captured with a Nikon D3100, Tamron 16-300mm lens with f/3.5. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

This is my absolute favorite shot! I remember being up in the Eiffel Tower waiting in line to get on the elevator to go down so I could go across the street to capture the Eiffel Tower sparkling with the strobe lights. As I was waiting to go down they started the strobes. They do this every hour for 5 minutes. By the time I made it to the base of the Eiffel Tower the strobes stopped. I decided to sit on a nearby bench since I had approximately 55 minutes before the next sparkle effect to begin. It was a beautiful, crisp fall night so I walked over the base and I just stared up. In that moment I grabbed my camera and captured this beauty. I want to having something to remember that moment, that breathtaking feeling and the gratitude of being able to witness and experience standing in front of an absolute masterpiece!

Editing

I converted the image into black and white and added a bit more contrast to add to the dramatic look of the iron.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D3100 base with me and then I bring an 18-55mm lens as well as 16-300mm for the shots I know I won't be able to get that close for. I always have my UV lens filters and Macro closeup set in my bag ready to go. I also keep a hot shoe flash in my bag at all times to help with needing the added bounce light.

Feedback

When trying to capture an image like this do not be afraid to work with the lighting from your surroundings. Though the Eiffel Tower literally towers over us, I knelt down as low as I could go and leaned back enough to remain balanced to get the angle I was going for. Get on the ground, get dirty and who cares if people look at you funny because you will end up with amazing photos and with angles people dream of!
