Campo Imperatore, Italy. The writer and explorer Fosco Maraini described it as Tibet on a small scale, in the valley of Phari Dzong, coining the term 'Little Tibet', which is still in. In this plateau there are herds of wild horses, cows and is still practiced transhumance. In recent decades several hermits returned in these mountains.

Behind The Lens

Location

Campo Imperatore, Italy. The writer and explorer Fosco Maraini described it as Tibet on a small scale, in the valley of Phari Dzong, coining the term 'Little Tibet', which is still in.

Time

3:36 pm, in the afternoon of a day at the end of October.

Lighting

At these altitudes the light is perfect, and often the sky is clear of clouds, which give more character and diversity to the light of the moment. I love this light.

Equipment

I used only a Nikon D3000, without any tripod or anything else that could prevent me from any fluid movement: this kind of photos I take during my excursions on this plateau, and too bulky equipment would not allow me to follow a herd and become part of it, transhuming with them.

Inspiration

In the past I was in the military in an Italian special corps specialized in moving around in the mountains. I learned to move between these rocks and terrains in a fluid and safe way, learning to love the mountains and those who live there. In these excursions I met wolves, herds of dear animals from roe deer to cows, and very often wild horses.

Editing

The photo did not require excessive post-production. I was at an altitude of 2200 meters, and at this height the air is already cleaner and sharper. The colors are exactly the real ones of that moment, without any alteration.

In my camera bag

Moving often through mountainous terrain, I always try to have an agile equipment, with nothing that can hinder the movement or the speed of taking the moment. Currently I always have two tropicalized camera bodies with me, Pentax K3 II or K 50 with which I take all my shots and Fujifilm S1 which with its 50x lens allows me to capture any elusive animals, but usually I never use it: by now I can to get so close to wild animals, with time and patience, to always be able to play with some of them and follow them in their transhumance.

Feedback

The only advice I can give is to use a camera with which you have a certain affinity and nothing more, but above all do not chase these animals: if you see them or cross them, sit down, relax. Enjoy the moment and the view and you will begin to see and feel like the animals around you, and suddenly you will find that one or more of them have approached you and want to get to know you. At a certain moment you will start taking pictures, without realizing it and without wanting to look for the shot: you will simply take pictures, and only when you are at home you will see what you have taken, and the photos will be wonderful and unexpected.
