Location
This image was taken in Bo-Kaap Cape Town, South Africa formerly known as the Malay Quarter. The area is known for its brightly colored homes and cobble stoned streets.Time
This shoot began at 7AM. However, we happened upon this pretty pink faded wall and captured this moment around 10:45AM.Lighting
Cape Town is known for having "all four seasons in one day". It may be sunny on your way to the location but by the time you are ready it will be pouring rain. This quickly shift weather will reward those who are patient with some of the world’s highest quality natural lighting. By the time we came across this beautiful background, the sun had fallen just right to capture, bright, yet soft light that worked perfectly with the concept of this shoot.Equipment
I captured this shot with my trusty Nikon D90 and a 50mm 1.8f lensInspiration
This was a test shoot I did for Faith Model Management in Cape Town, South Africa. I was fortunate to have my close friend and Fashion Photographer, Marnus Meyer assist me on this shoot. The rest of my team was comprised of the exceptional hair styling and makeup skills of Aneeqah Stellenboom and the graceful beauty of model Sune' Serfontein, we put together a fresh vintage styled look for this location. Sune’ was quite young at the time, so we kept the styling very natural. We coupled the fresh look with a "school girl' outfit which consisted of a light pink dress with a white rounded color and a light blue sweater. We picked The little yellow flower from a tree next to this location and it added the perfect balance of color tones to the image.Editing
I wanted the image to look and feel natural and focus the attention on the model and her clothing, which is why i minimized the post-processing. I brightened up the image just a little and enhanced some of the model's features by using a simple dodge and burn adjustment. In my camera bag
A Nikon D90 coupled with a 50mm 1.8 and 18-105mm zoom lens, 5-in-one reflector and a cold Red Bull.Feedback
Always be prepared to accept any changes or challenges that may come your way. Never settle for a mediocre performance, push yourself out of your comfort zone and capture the concept to the best of your abilities in the moment you are given. Accept any help you can get from friends, assistants, photographers, stylists and makeup artists. Great concepts can be born from a simple brainstorming session amongst peers.
