The photo was taken in my hostel room where I stayed during my college. I was still an amateur at photography and I still am. I was just trying to play with light in dark places. The other reason was there was a power failure that day and I did the next best thing I knew, I mean the only best thing I knowTime
It was close to midnight. I was sitting in my college hostel room and was editing my college photos and trying to figure out how I could have taken a photo better - which angle would have gotten a better shot, the light. That is when the power goes off. And my laptop died too since it was not plugged in that day. I picked up the camera and clicking everything in the dark playing with the camera features. Then I accidentally saw the shadow of the coin forming a heart shape. I had to try out everything to get the shot. I used the light from my mobile as the only source of light and used my DSLR to click the photo.Lighting
The trick in taking this sort of photo is the light. The height, the intensity, the shadow it formed. I didn't have reflectors or light softeners, all I had was my mobile phone flash. I made the best possible use of it.Equipment
I used Canon 1100D, 18-55mm F/3.5 lens, a Nokia 5580 phone's flash acting as the light, a dark room.Inspiration
I have seen similar photos making use of the wedding ring to depict love. I didn't have a ring. I had key chain rings. I did the best I could with that but it wasn't hard to figure out that they weren't finger rings and the idea of love wasn't strong with them. I dug through wallet and found some coins my dad had given me while he was abroad. This was the best of them and then it struck me - We all love money, some might admit it and some don't, but we all do in a way. That was the idea behind the photo.Editing
I had no experience with low light photography, or monochrome photos. This was all experimental photo shoot. In my camera bag
I have Canon 18-55mm, Canon 55-220mm and Sigma 18-250mm lens in my bag. I am still an amateur and will definitely upgrade once I get good at taking photos and also travel opportunities.Feedback
My photo has a lot of noise. I wasn't much aware of the clarity of the photo and the lens adjustment that was needed, especially in such low lights and when trying to capture the shadow, it doesn't always come as expected. My advice would be to have a great source of light, not a phone camera flash like I used. The angle is important as it decides what one actually want to tell through the photo. If I have taken from the top, there will be heart shadow, but the coin won't be visible. I have that photo as well, but its just a shadow of a heart. There is nothing much to tell about it. I agree that most of the photos we take are just on a whim but I believe if we see a story in front of us, it makes it easier for a person to take the photo and showcase the same.
