Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Williamsburg, in a building courtyard on a pretty warm day. It was a the beginning of Summer 2015.

Time

It was midday, I remember clearly because the sun was nearly blinding. Not sure why I chose to have it at that time of the day, but the challenges it presented helped me to realize that I need to work with my environment.

Lighting

The lighting was very harsh at that time of day. I repositioned the model often to keep her from squinting. Although there was plenty of natural light, I decided to use also add flash so that I can get really good contrast in Post.

Equipment

I used a Nikon d600, a 50mm & 24-85mm lenses, an external flash with filter and a lens filter.

Inspiration

I loved her dress, it was yellow and had multiple layers. I remember thinking she looked like a flower. The courtyard we were shooting in had a lot of greenery. All this paired with the fact that I was watching Alice in Wonderland at the time, I decided to create a human plant.

Editing

I did a lot of post editing to get the right balance of colors, glow and invisibility of her head. I used photoshop and then followed up with a bit of clean up in Lightroom. I used several layers of the same plants and flowers, merged them and used mask to remove what I didn't need. I then used several different blending modes to give it that 70s glow.

In my camera bag

My camera bag always has my Nikon d600 with the 50mm prime lens attached, I also bring along my 24 - 85mm zoom lens. When I am shooting an event I bring along my 70mm to 200mm lens -- it always makes every shot feel like a movie snapshot. I also find that starting off with that lens at an event gives the guest time to relax before you really go through the room. This way I can still take pictures of people from a distance and get the real candids that my clients love. My bag also has two to three bags of smokebombs, never know when there will be a cool opportunity to use them. I have my external flash, wireless remotes, cleansing wipes and most importantly granola bars and a bottle of water -- nothing like feeling low on energy while shooting active children, I always need that pick-me-up.

Feedback

I say just keep shooting!! If you feel like the light is not working continue to adjust and shoot but don't get discouraged. When you get to editing in Photoshop you can find creative ways to make that blown out photo work and look amazing. Try to shoot the model when they are not posing or are between poses -- thats how I get the best shots, the ones that really for Black & White for instance.
