Behind The Lens

Location

Eden Mill is a historic location in Northern Harford County, Maryland 21132. Eden Mill Park also has trails, canoeing, and kayaking.

Time

The only time this photo is possible, with natural light, is approximately 3-4 pm when the Sun shines through the only window in the tool room. The Grist Mill at Eden Mill closes at 4 pm.

Lighting

I am always looking for natural indirect light. I love the canopy/soft-box of a cloudy day. I like, for the art of the image, to accentuate the lights and the darks of any image, to my taste, in Lightroom Classic.

Equipment

I underexposed with a Nikon D750 1/100sec @f/7.1 with 24-70 Nikkor lens @24mm -- I rarely use a tripod. I capture everything in RAW.

Inspiration

I have visited Eden Mill many times over the years, but this was the first time I visited inside the Mill this late in the day. I was immediately struck by the light coming through the window. The colors, the highlights, and the naked reflecting bulb on the right all caught my attention.

Editing

Post-processing was done in Lightroom Classic. Because I intentionally underexposed the image my only post-processing was bringing out the highlights in the board wall and the bottom front board and vise.

In my camera bag

I usually carry the D750 and two lenses: Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8, and the Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8. I have a variety of Nikkor lenses including the 105mm f/2.8 prime, the 85mm f/1,8 prime, the 16-35mm f/4, and the 200-500mm f/5.6. I also carry a Nikon Cool-Pix P900 Super-zoom.

Feedback

If you are shooting in dim lighting and your goal is to get the highlights, don't open your aperture to its fullest setting. To achieve the depth of field set your aperture high enough to capture the detail and bump-up the ISO to a level that will not give you digital noise.
