Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Eungella National Park, Queensland, Australia. I had been sitting for hours trying to get a photo of platypus and was walking back to our chalet when I noticed this little group of mushrooms on the side of the path.

Time

It was photographed at about 8.10 in the morning on a partly cloudy drizzly day.

Lighting

The photo was taken in a rainforest in the morning on a partly sunny cloudy day and there had been a drizzle of rain. I wanted a nice blurry background so made sure I zoomed in close to the mushrooms

Equipment

It was handheld on a Canon EOS 1DX with a Canon 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 zoom lens.

Inspiration

The little group of mushrooms caught my eye as well as the dappled lighting and the damp leaves around the mushrooms. I tried to capture the dappled lighting and the dampness of the rainforest floor.

Editing

The original photo had quite a yellow cast so I had to correct the white balance and that was all I had to do .

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon EOS 1DX with my Canon 70-300mm zoom lens with me. In my bag I always have my Canon 16-35mm zoom lens. In addition I carry my camera raincoat, cleaning kit and various torches as I do a lot of night photography. I have my tripod with me on night photography trips as well as my remote cable.

Feedback

Eungella National Park if famous for its platypus but sometimes they don't show up or they are too fast to get a good photo. If you don't get a photo of what you hoped for, look around and see what else is there. I was so busy trying to get platypus shots I didn't notice this beautiful little group of mushrooms until I was walking back despondently after a morning of trying to photograph platypus. This photo was by and far the best photo I took on the whole trip.
