This was taken sitting on the hill at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.Time
This was taken mid morning so the sun was already quite bright. I was getting used to the settings with the new camera so I was pleased with how this came out in the bright sun.Lighting
I had only had the camera for a few weeks at this time and was really nervous about getting shots right in bright sunlight, especially the gulls with all their white feathers. I just kept adjusting the settings while I was watching them.Equipment
I had a new Nikon 5100 at the time, with a 55-300mm kit lens. I didnt take the tri-pod with me that day.Inspiration
I was using the surfers below the hill for practice taking action shots with the new camera. The gulls were sweeping up over the rocks and up over the top of the hill in front of us so I was watching them as well. I figured if I could get some decent shots of them on the wing, then I would be okay with taking shots of my kids playing baseball.Editing
Fortunately this one all I had to do was a slight crop as I was zoomed in watching him squark to start with.In my camera bag
My camera, finally after 9 years I have upgraded to a Nikon 5700. (Yeah not exactly pro but I am an amateur and single parent on a strict budget) I still have the 55-300mm kit lens used for this shot, an 18-55 kit lens that also came with the old 5100, and my new 35mm lens. I always have a spare battery, spare memory card and my lens cleaning kit. I have a backpack type bag as I have the kids with me most of the time, especially at the beach or car shows.Feedback
I think this is a good thing to practice on if you are interested in action shots. There are always plenty of gulls around. Even the surfers are good practice as they don't always move extremely quick but throw in some nice twists and turns.
