Behind The Lens
Location
This one was taken from the balcony of our townhouse about 15 mins drive from the beach looking towards Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.Time
It was a winter sunrise around 6:40am, there was just enough light to see the fog over the flood plain in between.Lighting
I always like to take sunrise shots when there is a little cloud cover for added colour and in winter the sun comes up further north so it rises behind the buildings.Equipment
Nikon D5100, 300mm lens and just my elbows leaning on the balcony rail...Inspiration
I try to get shots across that area on a pretty regular basis, you never know what the morning will bring in the way of colour. It's always better in winter with the addition of the fog. I was lucky this time to even catch some birds going for an early flight across the plain.Editing
I managed to avoid having to do anything with this one. I got lucky with the trees out the front not blowing across the top of the shot for a change. I actually like it being a little on the darker side.In my camera bag
As an amateur and a single parent, my bag is not full of anything that would be considered top end. I bought one of the backpacks about a year ago so trips with the kids is easier. They have their own little point and shoot cameras that I usually end up carrying as well. The Nikon is always in there with the 300mm lens pretty much always attached. It has a polarising filter and the uv filter. I have a 18 - 55mm lens that doesnt get used as often, except at car shows. I keep a lens cleaning kit in there along with my remote and spare memory card and battery.Feedback
I honestly dont think i am in a position to give advice about really good shots. I think most of the time I am lucky, and I just stand out there and take as many shots as possible until the sun has risen too far and the colour has gone. Often i will play around with different settings while I'm at it, if one setting picks out the colours an the light in the hollows better I will stick with that for a few minutes..
