The photo was taken near Uluru at Christmas time 2008. My trusty old Kodak was my first digital camera and having to travel light for flights I couldn't take the bulky SLR.Time
I'd been out wandering waiting for my mate to knock off work and was heading back towards our meeting spot in the mid-afternoon. The clouds were rolling in but there had been no rain and the cool breeze was pretty refreshing considering it was summer.Lighting
The mix of foreboding storm clouds in the background and the remaining daylight to bolster the Kodaks paltry flash has really made the colour pop. Of all the desert flowers I photographed, nothing stood out quite like this one.Equipment
Kodak Z740 with the factory fixed lens and flash.Inspiration
I'd been lucky enough that my trip to the Red Centre happened to coincide with recent rainfall. The desert was blooming! The red dirt was buried under a swathe of green and flowers were abundant. I was in a hurry when I saw this afraid I'd be late back to my meeting spot with my friend so there was no time to try anything tricky but it was just so beautiful, the storm clouds trying (and failing) to drain the colour out of the landscape, the trio of flowers in various states to represent their life cycle, and I am quite fond of yellow in general.Editing
No post processing other than basic cropping (ok it's all I can really do). I really am such an amatuer I don't even have decent editing software. In my camera bag
These days I'm packing a Canon 600D with a 55-250mm lens for most photographs, also a 18-55mm I'm still learning to play with and a 50mm and a polarising filter. I travel with my tripod in the boot of my car and one eye on the scenery as much as possible. My next purchase will be a good flash gun.Feedback
If you're planning a trip to Uluru try to go when the desert is in flower. It's amazing to see how life forms don't just survive, but flourish under such harsh conditions. Don't try to cram too much in a day or you'll miss so much. Take the time to have a wander, no plans, nowhere to be and see what you find.
