Location
This image was taken at the mouth of the Brunswick River in Northern New South Wales, Australia.Time
I had got to the location before any of the dawn light started to rise over the horizon. This image was one of the first I had taken so it would have been more then 30 minutes before dawn.Lighting
The cloud cover this morning did prove to make the lighting a little less spectacular than I had hoped for. It was somewhat flat but I kept taking images through the dawn and (not so) golden hour period, hoping it would get a little better. Sadly it didn't but I still went home a very happy photographer, regardless of what I was hoping I would capture.Equipment
I used a Sony A77 with a Tamron 10-24 mounted on a sturdy tripod with a cable release and used the timer on my phone.Inspiration
I have been a little obsessed with trying to capture good images of jettys and groins. This location was about an hour from where were staying on holiday so I thought it would be worthy of a early morning trip instead of a few hours sleep. The first image I captured didn't give any perspective of the length of the groin. I set up the camera as high as possible (something I don't like to normally do) on the tripod to get a sense of the length of the groin. It still looked a little odd. I moved everything to the top of a small concrete structure off to the side of the walkway to gain a little more height but it placed everything off center.Editing
Basically the processing was converting to B&W and a boost of the contrast. In my camera bag
I travel with too much camera gear. I've been more of a gearhead than a photographer but I am beginning to understand what is useful for the shoot which I have planned. I have been leaning to this combination (A77 and 10-24 ultrawide) for many trips as it does give good results. I do tend to do a lot of 'wide' shots. I typically carry 2 Sony bodies (A57 & A77) a 50mm macro (the odd flower or so), 8mm fisheye (for a totally different perspective of the world), 17-50 f2.8 (more of a normal type of perspective) and a 70-200 f2.8 (to get those little far away things). Filters include a circular polarizer and big stopper. I did have a timer intervelometer but it failed a couple of days before this shoot, hence the el cheapo release and the old phone stopwatch.Feedback
I wanted the perspective of this shot to show the length of the groin. I had to shoot from a lot higher point than I would have liked. The camera would have been around 8' off the walkway for this shot (up on the concrete and the camera as high as possible on the tripod) . I lost the symmetry of the groin but the extra height was a compromise to get type of shot I wanted. The color was flat and I could have over-saturated in post but was very happy for the B&W and contrasty final image. Thanks for looking - Dan
