Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the local botanical gardens in Brisbane, Queensland

Time

This image was taken mid morning.

Lighting

The light was very soft thanks to some even cloud cover.

Equipment

I used a Sony A77 to capture this image with an old Minolta 50mm macro. No flash was used and the camera was hand held.

Inspiration

These plants caught my eye on that day as they still do now. The symmetry and the the size of them look like a cactus on steroids. They look so pointy and each of the "points" are over a foot tall. I had just placed the lens on the body to try to get a good shot. This image was the first one I took and noticed the aperture was wide open. I started closing it down to increase the depth of field and eventually ended up with some photos in camera I was happy with. When I got home and looked on the big screen, this image had the best "feel" out of the lot.

Editing

The creamy nature of the image was a result of the lens and my haste (aka mistake) to take an image. Just a little boost of the colors in post to help.

In my camera bag

I have a number of Sony bodies and many Sony, old Minolta and third party lenses. I usually take 2 bodies and around 5 lenses with me but decide before I leave the car, what may not suit the place or weather and trim down the weight. I almost always bring a tripod, polarizer and variable ND filter along with me.

Feedback

I almost never chimp while I'm out. If I'm going to delete shots it's usually after I have looked at them on a big screen. This was the first shot of a bunch of images I took of this plant. Technically it was totally opposite to what I wanted to get in camera. I do like the other shots and have posted one of the "better" (maybe?) shots in my gallery, but this one has just a little something different. Its just so creamy. Simple advice is to spend a little more time, explore different angles and learn how to use the spectrum of the camera and lenses ability to capture different aspects of the same subject. And DONT CHIMP :)
