Considered "docile" hornets--I dont know that docile and hornet in the same sentence is believable. These things set up house in my vegtable garden every year in July. They dig underground and I find huge mounds of soil and if whatched long enough-one of these things comes and goes. They can actually tackle a cicada in mid air and bring it to the ground---they drag it back to the chamber where their nymphs are hiding under ground and take it down in the hole to them. Cicada's arent there only target - dragonflies, horseflies, beetles are also dinner for the children. Quite impressive in size, a 3 inch hornet in my book is intimidating, however being in my garden with them--they just fly around and look at me.
