Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken while out on a nature hike in the Ozarks. I found this thistle to be most lovely.

Time

This was taken early afternoon. It was a Fall type of day, so there was little battle with the sun.

Lighting

It was a beautiful day for hiking and for capturing the things I loved about it. I was not battling with the sun for light supremacy - it was just enough to bounce off of the thistle-prickles and have it jump off of the negative space.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 40D with the kit glass. The camera was handheld.

Inspiration

I have a thing with minimalist photography. Thing = I adore it. There is something magical about capturing beautiful negative space along with a clearly defined subject. Why did I take this shot in particular? Because I had never seen a thistle like this before, and when I bent down to take a look at it I found a little spider just chillin' on it. (You cannot see the spider in this image because he would not cooperate with being on the correct side for all that negative space). I was inspired to take this image because I wanted to - I had yet to have a floral image in my collection that I liked.

Editing

Because of the time of year that this image was taken, most of the browns and oranges were provided by nature. I upped the saturation and gave it a slight lovely tint of brown.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it simple. My Canon and typically a prime lens. I work with the light I have and try not to over think it too much.

Feedback

Just go out, explore, and capture what you want. If you like a certain subject, capture it. It really is as simple as that. Just go and do it.
