Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken - oddly enough - under a bridge. In the location where this image was taken used to stand an old grain mill. They destroyed the grain mill but left the old rail lines, and a few bits of the concrete structure. There is a bridge right above our heads.

Time

It was an extremely bright day with almost zero cloud cover, so the shadows were incredibly harsh. Under the bridge there was a clear distinction between light and dark. She just happened to be perfectly aligned with the light and I wanted to capture it.

Lighting

It was taken a little after lunch time - afternoon. Also, surrounding the bridge are white concrete structures and a parking lot. I found that even though their was harsh light, under the bridge was this magical place of bounce light from the concrete.

Equipment

It was taken using a Canon 40D using a standard kit lens. Since they were playing and running around it was a handheld shot, and no flash or reflector was used.

Inspiration

I was in college when I took this photo. I was doing an assignment for a class and my brother & sister-in-law were kind enough to let me borrow their children for the afternoon. We quickly got the assignment completed and the kids were just playing around a bit. This shot was taken after the assignment was completed. She was not a fan of being so dirty and was incredibly shy of the camera. This shot is by far my favorite and was not even apart of the assignment.

Editing

The unique lighting conditions allowed for some interesting contrast to happen, so the only post-processing that was done was turning the image to B&W. She has some of the largest eyes I have ever seen on a child and they captured and focused on the lens almost perfectly.

In my camera bag

Right now I carry a Canon 5D Mark III, with a 50mm prime attached to it. I have found that if I carry around any larger of a lens it is too easy to become distracted and not focused on the subject I am trying to capture.

Feedback

Because this image spawned from a college assignment, there was pre-planning involved. Especially with the location and the subject. This location was close to where we all lived and had everything I was looking for - especially since they could not meet me until after lunch time so I needed a covered place. I chose her and her sister specifically because of their eyes - I needed to tell a story with the assignment I was working on - and their eyes tell you a story. This particular image, however, was not apart of the assignment, this was taken after we had completed our task. You could almost call it a totally random shot. All of the adults were talking, I saw that she had lined up with the harsh contrasted lighting behind her and wanted to capture it.
