This is an absolutely beautiful piece. It is wonderful lighting and control of shadows. I love the depth of field as well with just a hint of either the horses shoulder or belly along the left side to give the photo some added contrast.

It is wonderful that you were able to capture the horse's soul in this picture. She looks strong and beautiful. If I hadn't read the comment I wouldn't have even thought that she was so sick. This was a beautiful farewell.

One of the most stunning and esquisite portraits I've ever seen. Her story is tragic and yet she is still alive in your soul. Beautifu lines, shadows and DOF. I love the reflection in her eyes and the outline of her body. A stunning imaging!

Would you sell a large print of this photo? I love it so much and I would like to display it in my dining space.

Location
This is a photo very close to my heart, I am a professional Equestrian photographer most of the time my work involves the beautiful interaction and bond between horse and rider/handler. Although sometimes I am asked to capture the very last minutes of a horses life, due to modern medicine not being able to help the equestrian any further in life. This image was taken on the property the mare was laid to rest that very day. Holding my own tears back watching the heart break of the owner knowing what was to come. I took this image under a tree in a green paddock whilst he was eating his last few blades of grass, feeling the breeze on a summery day.Time
Because of the time sensitivity of this particular job, it was mid-day, very bright and sunny.Lighting
The lighting was not "ideal" for taking flattering images of horses with the mid-day sun baking over head, so we went out under the tree line surrounding the paddock.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II Lens: Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM ISO 400 FOCAL LENGTH 150.0 mm (183.7 mm in 35mm) APERTURE f/4.5 EXPOSURE TIME (1/400) Hand held Natural Light onlyInspiration
I needed to capture personality, the life and spirt of this mare for my client, I wanted an image that my client could look at in the future and reminisce of the good times, the shows she won, the joy and fun times.Editing
With this image I had an undesirable fence in the background so I blacked out the background, increased contrast and turned it to black & white. I retouched the highlights. In my camera bag
