Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a very muddy cornfield. The location was a fun challenge because the mud would literally suction around my boots... I almost wiped out a couple times.

Time

Afternoon. It ended up being the perfect gloomy, overcast day that I was needing to go along with the styling of the shoot.

Lighting

I used a single off-camera flash with a Westcott Octa-box modifier.

Equipment

Canon 7d, Canon 50mm 1.8 lens, Yongnuo flash, Westcott Octabox.

Inspiration

I try to do at least one personal project a year. I usually am inspired by fairytales or fantasy. This photo was inspired by the scarecrow. I had this vision of a girl in a ball skirt made of burlap.

Editing

Yes. I did some color-processing and also added in some of the crows. The one on her shoulder was actually a Halloween decoration that I picked up, but I also did some editing to him in Photoshop to make him look more realistic.

In my camera bag

Canon 7d, Yongnuo flash, Pocket wizard flash triggers, grey card. extra batteries and memory cards, westcott octabox kit.

Feedback

Be creative in thinking of ways to make your vision come alive. You don't have to spend a fortune to create some really amazing and surreal images. I made this burlap ball skirt myself using some cheap material and burlap that I bought at home depot. You can also create the look of fog with flour or cornstarch. Also, a lot of magic can be created with Photoshop. Hone your editing skills! Do as much as you can in camera and then see how you can take your photo that extra mile or two with post-processing.
