This photo was taken in my home when my son was less than 4 months old. At the time my wife and I were just getting into photography and were playing with our son as a subject for our work :) It was a relaxing time, laughing and joking while playing games with our son.Time
This was taken early in the day, when we were all up and having fun playing around the house. We just got that hat in within the previous few days and were having a blast playing with our son on his furry blanket that he loved.Lighting
I do not recall anything special about the lighting for this shot. Our home has some great natural lighting when we have all the blinds opened up and only some additional camera flash was used.Equipment
For this phone I was using my Canon T3i with the 18-55mm lens. I was using a Speedlite 430EX II. This photo was free hand, as I prefer to take most of my photos without the use of a tripod.Inspiration
We had newborn photos taken of our son that were less than stellar and we decided we would like to do something a bit more fun and exciting. We ordered in a bunch of hats and ties and all sorts of other goofy things and just spent a couple hours playing with him to see what we could come up with. From the hundreds of photos that we did, this is one of our absolute favorites.Editing
Since this was when we were just getting into photography we were still very new with our post processing. At the time we were using Adobe Photoshop CS6 and in this we did mostly just blemish touchup and some correction on some of the background. We adjusted the lighting a little bit but for the most part we had a great shot to start with.In my camera bag
I normally don't care much with me in my bag. If I am out on the road I have my T3i with my 75-300mm lens for most of my nature work. I will also carry my EOS 60D with my 55-250mm lens. I rarely bring my flash or tripod with me unless I am doing work at night and need the stability of my tripod. When I go out on a mission to take some photos its normally just myself and my two cameras, maybe an extra lens if I want to get some close up work.Feedback
The best advise I was given by a photographer friend of mine, was to just keep at it and have patience. When working with children you can't always get that great shot on your first click. I have spent hours with my kids taking thousands of photos to get maybe 50that I truly love and are willing to share. Keep at it, have fun and treat your time with the subject as a relaxing time. If you focus too much on the work, you will never get them to relax and have fun. The best photos I have taken and this one in particular was just my son, wife and I laughing and joking around, taking some photos while we were all laughing hysterically.
