The Model (Max) and myself had set up a shoot mid afternoon with this and a few other beautiful gowns, however because of a few delays we where unable to get a start until later and then to challenge us even more it began to rain... The shoot its self was meant to have a springtime park feel and that definitely wasn’t going to happen. So we relocated to the only real dry area nearby which happened to be a walkway tunnel under a bridge Max where we shot a good amount of interesting shots. This was shot was the last of the gowns and I was really looking for something a little different so we took the punt and had Max step out into the rain with one of my elective umbrellas.Time
By the time we got to this shot it was around 8pm, fortunately it was still quite warm as it was late spring.Lighting
So this was a two light set up with a bit of a bounce fast twist. The back light was a speed light together with a home made beauty dish sitting around 3 meters directly behind the model because it was raining it was set up on a tripod and I had loosely tied a white plastic bag over it to protect it from the rain. The main flash was again a speed light in a 24” soft box that was sat just inside of the tunnel approximately 3 feet to the right of me. The twist came by way for the defective umbrella which not only added to the overall look of the shoot but because it was reflective it illuminated showcasing its shape but also adding extra fill light to the rear of the model.Equipment
From memory I was using a Nikon D90 with a Nikor 24-70 2.8 on it and the shot was hand held.Inspiration
Inspiration was born out of necessity more than anything else, we needed to return the dresses the next morning so we had to come up with something. Like most photographers I spend a lot of time looking at and dissecting other peoples work as a way of building up our knowledge and technical skills so the idea of shooting in the rain wasn’t anything new, I was aware that when rain is backlit it becomes illuminated and by placing the model in front of the light it would block the light and become a halo around her, I then obviously needed to light her and the umbrella to me made sense because I didn’t want a dark area directly behind her. So in answer to the question there wasn’t really a specific shot that inspired it but a bunch of techniques picked up over the years mashed into one.Editing
For post there was a bit of skin and dress clean up done and then basic dodging and burning it balance the light, highlight her face a little more and exaggerate the rain a little more.In my camera bag
I’m not really a gear nut and mainly just walk around with a single camera (currently a D750) for lens I use the sigma 50mm art series and a 12-24mm for wide shoots and couple of speed lights with basic triggers for those just in case moments, mainly though I’m a natural light shooter and don’t like to be weighed down by excessive kit.Feedback
For this particular shot my advice would be to find someone that is brave enough to want to stand in the rain and experiment, the actual shot is not that hard to do. In general though the best advice I could give anyone is to look at other peoples work a lot! But rather than study them with the goal to try and replicate an image, work out what they did to create it and take note of technique used. Every technique you learn is another tool in your bag that can actually be more powerful than the gear you carry around to assist in expressing your own unique voice.
