Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was actually taking in my living room where I had set up a black backdrop and 1 strobe light with an umbrella.

Time

I believe by this point in the shoot it was the evening time as we had been shooting from the late afternoon.

Lighting

Don't be precious about your lights. They will get covered with powder. I used 1 Sb-600 flash gun and it was worked a treat. I considered adding a rim light but it added to much separation and I enjoyed the immersive effect of the powder on the model.

Equipment

Camera: D90 Lens: 50mm 1.8D Light: 1 Speedlight Sb-600 with Umbrella Shooting through . That's it.

Inspiration

I've always been fascinated by movement and capturing movement and emotion in different mediums of photography (long exposure, sports, levitation). I've always felt that smoke showed the trail of the movement and the effort that went into it.

Editing

The amount of post processing in this photo was very little. Basic exposure adjustments in lightroom to ensure a balanced image and then some skin retouching using frequency separation but that's it. In terms of colour it is pretty much as shot on the day.

In my camera bag

Well this shot was taken nearly 2 years ago and I've had a bit of an upgrade since then. I now have : Nikon D610 Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 50mm 1.8D < Love this lens. 35mm 1.8G DX SB-600 And a 12mm Sigma that was kindly donated to me by a dear friend a while ago.

Feedback

Get Messy. Just do it. Don't be careful about getting powder on your camera. They are built to last. I was cleaning powder from my carpet for weeks to come ... but it was soo worth it. And not to mention the amount of fun you will have. Get Friends involved. Having an extra pair of hands is VITAL for this sort of shoot. They don't need to have any camera knowledge to assist, just make sure they know how to have fun, because at the end of the day it's as much about the experience as the final product :). Have fun!
