Location
This photo was taken after a 'Coffee and Camera' Session I organised in Leeds, where photographers/models/make up artists would turn up for a chat and coffee. Afterwards, we all went around Leeds and took photos of the models or surroundings. This was taken in a little courtyard of a residential estate.Time
Taken during the afternoon on a slightly cloudy British day (we only get rain and wind in The North).Lighting
I wanted to make the eyes the main focus of this frame, so I laid the model in a certain direction to allow the natural light to form a good catch light in the left of the eyes. This in turned created a soft shadow area on the cheeks of the model.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D610 using a Nikkor 85mm 1.8G and all natural lighting.Inspiration
I was looking for a place to shoot amongst the urban scene of Leeds. Having never photographed the model before I knew I wanted to capture her captivating eyes in some way that allowed for no distractions. The Lavender matched her eyes perfectly, although they were on a bush that was in a big plant pot, so it took some manoeuvring to get the image.Editing
Post processing including contrast, levels, brightness and colour adjustments. These were carried out between PS and LR. A bit of dodge and burning later with a touch of gradient mapping, and selective colouring, I was left with a photo that was finished. However, after turning off the monitor and going to bed, I woke up in the morning with a sleepy set of eyes and realised the eyes did not pop enough for how spectacular they were, bringing out some of the highlights using curves gave me the photo you see today. In my camera bag
I always carry a small bag with me to make sure that I focus on my compositions rather than my gear. Saying that, my bag is also a tardis. I always always always carry with me my 50mm and 85mm 1.4 & 1.8 G lenses. I am a massive sucker for prime lenses. These go well with the Nikon D610 that sits in the bag with a Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 attached that allows me to ready for any eventuality. In my side pockets, an SB-60 (yes old flash) with transmitter and receiver ... because you never know when you might need some off camera flash. Oh, I also carry spare camera battery, business cards, electrical tape, smoke pellets, and painkillers.Feedback
Light. Always look for the light. I always follow the light of the scene like a moth. Models have previously described me staring into the distance and making strange hand gestures ... I call that my thinking face. All I am doing is visualising the setting with the right light. The light is what makes this photos, and the model, of course, but watch your composition also. If you compose the photo properly you can direct the viewer to the sections you want.
