Behind The Lens

Location

Niagra falls in the US I was traveling after having worked in children's camp there for the summer Niagra was the third stop on our tour of the states and a place I had always wanted to visit.

Time

Just after lunch wandering around the park taking in the fantastic scenery before going down onto the maid in the mist, a boat that allows you to get right up close to the falls, I also got some fantastic images from the bottom looking up into the falls.

Lighting

A bright and sunny day I loved the way the light bounces off the water and how it allows for great contrast on the rocks while allowing the water to look glassy

Equipment

Camera: Praktica DCZ 6.3 Aperture: f/5.9 ISO: 70 Small and portable this was my first camera given to me for my 18th birthday I have since upgraded as technology had moved on but I have some great pictures to thank this camera for.

Inspiration

This image was taken through the railings leaning out over the falls I had to get quite low down to get the angle I wanted for the shot it was tricky but I wanted something a bit more unusual from Niagra and wanted to get up close to the edge. I wanted to take something different from this spectacular location from an angle which most people don't think to see.

Editing

A little tweaking I use a simple piece of software called Picasa which allowed me to adjust the contrast and light levels very user friendly and easy to use it takes no time at all to brighten an image up and make it look sharp.

In my camera bag

Other than my camera I take spare SD cards and plenty of spare batteries, there is nothing worse than getting part way through the day, running out and seeing something later on that you wish you could have captured. Depending on what Im planning to shoot I might take my tripod but I always take a fair sized blob of blue tac, I often get questioned about this when I get my camera out but when I explain that its great for propping up your camera if a fence post is all you've got available and you want to both hold it steady but also at a slight angle, you see realization dawn and a 'why didn't I think of that' face.

Feedback

Think not just of what it is you want to capture but of the framing you want to give you image, get into different positions, try different angles, move about and get creative. There may well have been hundreds of people out there who have shot the same scene but make it unique to you put your own spin on it. Get the lighting and the composition right, edit any balance needed after and you've got yourself a decent image.
