Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Ironbridge Shropshire UK not far from where I live. I was out on the river canoeing with some friends and saw the perfect opportunity for a great picture coming round the bend so moving as slowly as possible ahead of the others to try and not disturb the water on a still day I managed to take this. It wasn't easy, I had to put my paddle down to take this photo and trying to stay in the middle of the river without spinning around as I was drifting downstream whilst at the same time trying not to create ripples by moving about too much in my boat was certainly challenging!

Time

This was taken on a lovely spring afternoon on a surprisingly calm and clear day for the time of year.

Lighting

It was a stunningly sunny day for the time of year, I was very glad to have the sun behind me to be able to capture this so clearly.

Equipment

This was a complete chance shot! As I wasn't planning on taking many photos on this trip I didn't have my usual camera with me (aside from the fact I'm not sure I would dare take it out on the water in my canoe!) so this was simply captured on my phone (a Honor 9 Lite) which I had in my buoyancy aid and quick to hand as it was too good an opportunity to miss!

Inspiration

I have photographed this bridge many times as I have paddled under it this particular shot was complete chance as I came around the corner! I have wanted to capture a landscape where you can see it mirrored in the water for a long time, but when ever I find a good spot for one the day is never calm enough to get that nice reflection on the water so to find this with both the reflection and it completing the circle in the water was a rare treat!

Editing

A few minor adjustments using Adobe Photoshop Express. The Dehaze function has got to be one of the best simple fixes I've come across in the programs I've used, it really adds to the clarity of your photos. I also increased the contrast to bring out some of the shadows making the image slightly crisper and added a little more saturation to make the colours pop.

In my camera bag

On a normal day when I'm planning to take photos (not on the occasion this photo was taken) I have a simple set up, my trusty camera a Fujifilm Finepix S which I've had for years, its simple and does the job. One of my favorite things about it is that it takes standard AA batteries and although I usually use rechargeable batteries in it (and take plenty of spares!) its nice to know that if I do run out of juice during the day and I'm away from home I can easily get some more power without having to wait hours for specific batteries to recharge. Spare SD cards because nobody likes running out of space and being told they cant take any more pictures for the day! I don't often take a tripod and prefer to use what the situation offers whether that be a fence, a tree stump or in this case the side of my canoe. One thing I will always take is a blob of bluetak it is fantastic at propping your camera up if you want slightly more angle on a shot or to level your camera great for when you want to keep things steady without having to carry a tripod.

Feedback

Patience and lots of it! You can plan a scene and then have a gust of wind ruin the whole shot. Waiting for the perfect conditions takes time and then you've got to be there when they are. Consider you framing when taking a shot and think of the symmetry, what you want the focus to be and make sure the horizon stays straight.
