When I was in London many many many moons ago none of the police had sidearms. That would have been in 83'.

Ministry of Defence police were first armed as constables and prior to that as watchmen. As a private police force they are fully trained in the use of firearms from their first day of training. So, even prior to 1983, the various armed services constabularies would have been fully armed. They became MOD police in 1971 with the merger of the three constabularies.
